Concurrent Validity of a Low-Cost Manometer for Objective Assessments of Respiratory Muscle Strength

Novel research, by Weill Cornell Medical's Dr. James Curtis, Ph.D., and colleagues Valentina Mocchetti, MS, CCC-SLP, and Anaïs Rameau, MD showed the industry-standard method for assessing respiratory muscle strength typically involves a device costing around $1500. This study examined the validity of a $40 alternative device. Results found near-perfect agreement between the industry standard and the novel, low-cost, commercially available alternative. Clinicians can consider using this device to objectively assess respiratory muscle strength as part of a standardized clinical swallow evaluation and within the context of a respiratory muscle strength training treatment paradigm.
